Facilitation

mag has facilitated dozens of retreats in women's and children's services for groups as small as 15 and as large as 100. Major retreats have typically included board members, senior executives and physician and clinical leaders and middle management.

As a trained facilitator and often the content expert for a look at the future of the service line, mag serves as a translator for the many different disciplines that must come together for success in these service lines.

For retreats, we function from a format of first defining the current state. Then we present and examine trends in the service line nationally.

After that, participants--including the organization's system leaders and those responsible for overall system strategic planning, as well as service line leadership--outline the desired position of the service line, and how it will support the goals of the organization.

At that point, we move on to the actions needed to get to the desired state by fiscal year over the agreed upon planning time frame.

Some find it challenging to plan backwards from the desired state, versus the current state. However, this format ultimately results in pragmatic, actionable results with fewer diversions into territory that ends up not being feasible.

There is significant pre- and post-retreat work as well, with a summary report and recommendations following the retreat.

Work group Intensives

We are often asked to provide content expertise to working groups. Consider combining a working group "Intensive" (focused meeting) in the afternoon with a larger group presentation in the morning for the best return on your travel dollars.

An Intensive can be interdisciplinary or functional. Interdisciplinary groups might work on a specific problem, such as researching the need, purpose, risk reduction potential, physician and patient engagement issues, and costs/revenues associated with bringing on OB-Gyn hospitalists (laborists). Functional groups more often work on a functional process, like marketing or architectural plans. More often than not, it's a combination.

The time needed is driven by desired outcome, as are the number of sessions. We can also call in physicians or other experts in specific areas as additional content experts if needed for particular discussions. The format, need for other content experts, etc. is determined during a start-up conference call.

Our broadly-based backgrounds and facilitation skills bring cohesion and consensus to goals and tactics, usually pretty quickly. Contact us for ideas on how to shape an Intensive to meet your specific needs.
